Polyurea-based technology for waterproofing terraces and balconies is used and recommended due to several important characteristics: durability, functionality, and aesthetics. Polyurea membranes create extremely tight coatings that act as a barrier against moisture and contaminants.

The polyureas we offer are distinguished by their ease of use compared to other products. They can be applied with a roller or brush, meaning that professional waterproofing of a balcony or terrace requires no specialized equipment. These are so-called cold-applied polyureas .

Waterproofing of terraces and balconies

The most common problem with owning a terrace or balcony is leaks resulting from improper weather . The consequences, such as moisture and water seeping through the layers that were supposed to act as a barrier, can become apparent as early as the first winter, and repairing such errors can often be costly and labor-intensive.

Balcony and terrace surfaces are particularly susceptible to moisture and seasonal temperature fluctuations. One way to waterproof a terrace or balcony is with a two-component resin system, which ensures long-term use and can withstand any challenges. The combination of polyurea membranes called Neoproof Polyurea R and Neodur FT Elastic creates a structure with the three characteristic features mentioned above.

Neoproof Polyurea R – durability of the entire system

Neoproof Polyurea R is a resin that is applied in two or three layers using Neotextile NP (the mesh is applied wet-on-wet, the mesh is glued onto the first layer and immediately painted over, then the final layer is applied 24 hours later). The membrane is highly resistant to damage and has excellent waterproofing properties . Neoproof Polyurea R is based on aliphatic resins, creating coatings resistant to UV radiation. A major advantage of this product is that it can withstand rain within one hour of application , making it suitable for use in unpredictable weather conditions. As mentioned earlier, it has excellent waterproofing properties, but how does it react to constant temperature changes? It reacts very well.

Polyurea is a highly flexible , which means it doesn't crack and adapts to changing temperatures . Based on tests, the coating's tensile strength was determined. For the coating to tear, it would have to elongate four times, which is impossible when applied to relatively even surfaces. The minimum application temperature is 5°C. Neoproof Polyurea R creates a uniform coating that, compared to other waterproofing methods, such as tiles, creates an impenetrable barrier to moisture or water. In the case of tiles, moisture can penetrate through the joints.

Neodur FT Elastic – functionality

The additional sealing with a topcoat of the Neoproof Polyurea R polyurea coating enhances the functionality of the entire system. Neodur FT Elastic is applied as a final layer to facilitate cleaning of the coating when waterproofing terraces or balconies. It provides an excellent combination of mechanical resistance and waterproofing properties. It is based on a purely aliphatic resin containing UV filters , making the resin resistant to sunlight and changing weather conditions. It provides high resistance to abrasion and mechanical loads , which is important when using the resin in areas exposed to traffic, such as balconies or terraces.

The combination of these products provides a durable and functional finish for terraces and balconies. Not to mention the aesthetic appeal of the coating.

Another advantage of this product is the ability to achieve above-average anti-slip properties using Neodur FT Elastic mixed with 3% by weight of Neotex Antiskid M anti-slip additive . This type of combination achieved a PTV index value of 49 , while the required result (indicating a low risk of slipping) is 36. This means the risk of slipping on a terrace finished with this system is very low.

Application of the entire terrace and balcony waterproofing system: stages

Substrate preparation

Before applying the entire system, each type of substrate must be properly prepared and cleaned. The surface should be clean, dry, and free of dust, oil, grease, and loose old coatings. The polyurea insulation system is suitable for protecting terraces and balconies with various substrates. The most common substrates requiring renovation and additional protection are tiles and concrete floors.

Concrete surfaces are best cleaned with Sulfanol-A , and tiles with Emulsol RN-1 . Sulfanol A is used undiluted. To clean the surface, spread it over the entire surface and 10-15 minutes after application. Emulsol RN-1 works similarly to Sulfanol A, but before application, dilute it with water to create a 2-3% solution. The surface should then be rinsed with water and allowed to dry thoroughly to prevent moisture from trapping under subsequent coats.

An additional step in preparing the floor is filling any gaps . We recommend filling any unevenness in the substrate with Neodur FT Putty, . Apply the product after applying the appropriate primer. In the case of Neopox Primer WS , apply the primer first, and then, after waiting the required 24 hours, apply Neodur FT Putty, a quick-drying gap-filling compound. The product can be repainted with Neoproof Polyurea R waterproofing membrane 2 hours

Selection of soil depending on the type of substrate:

  • Concrete

dry, seasoned 28 days

moist, fresh, 2 weeks old

capillary moisture rising from the ground

  • Tiles

Neoproof Polyurea R Application

After properly preparing the substrate (filling gaps, priming), you can proceed to the next step – applying two (or three, meshed with Neotextile NP reinforcing fabric) layers of Neoproof Polyurea R polyurea. Neoproof Polyurea R is a two-component product, meaning that before application, the two components must be mixed in the appropriate proportion (13 parts by weight of component A to 6 parts by weight of component B). After mixing, the resulting mixture should be used within the time specified in the technical data sheet. The mixture may thicken significantly over time during application.

Theoretical consumption for two layers is 1.5 kg/m² without reinforcing fleece or 2.5-3 kg/m² with mesh. Neoproof Polyurea R should not be applied in high humidity conditions or if such conditions are expected during the coating's curing. The minimum temperature during application is 5°C; however, we always recommend avoiding application at extreme temperatures. After 24 hours or less (the higher the temperature during application, the shorter the drying time), another layer of the product can be applied. The same applies to applying the finishing coat; 24 hours after applying the last layer of Neoproof Polyurea R, it can be sealed with the first topcoat of Neodur FT Elastic. Neoproof Polyurea R is applied by roller, brush, or airless spray.

Neodur FT Elastic application

Neodur FT Elastic is a two-component polyurea resin designed for waterproofing terraces and balconies. Before application, combine components A and B in the appropriate weight ratio (3A : 2.5B). Neodur FT Elastic is applied in two layers, for a total theoretical consumption of 0.6 kg/m² . The minimum application temperature is 5°C, and the time interval between the first and second layer should be 4 hours at 25°C. The material is applied immediately after mixing the components by pouring the mixture onto the floor and spreading it evenly with a velour roller or brush. Due to the very fast setting time, prepare an amount of product that can be used within the potlife of the mixture. The coating is ready for use after just 5 hours for the application of the second layer. Full curing takes 24 hours.

Decorative effect

Our offer includes Troken Stone . It allows you to achieve an aesthetically pleasing finish on your terrace or balcony. This product visually conceals imperfections. A major advantage is its versatility; Troken Stone can be applied to walls and floors, both indoors and outdoors. Its relatively low consumption (0.125-0.25 kg/m² ) makes it a cost-effective solution. Troken Stone granite paint is applied in a single coat using a system spray gun Floortop 1K waterproofing topcoat .

Troken Stone Liquid Granite

We protect the Troken Stone paint with two layers of Floortop 1K .

Another option for achieving an interesting decorative effect is decorative flakes . The final layer of Neoproof Polyurea R (while still wet!) can be sprinkled with floor flakes, then sealed with two coats of Floortop 1K .
