Selecting the right flooring primer

Priming the substrate is a crucial step in any painting process, determining the final appearance of the coating, as well as its durability and functionality. This is especially important for floors exposed to high mechanical and chemical loads, such as pedestrian and vehicle traffic, cleaning procedures, and others. Typically, the technical data sheet for a topcoat will specify which primers are suitable for use, but several primers are often listed. In this case, we can consider other factors, such as:

Porosity/absorption of the substrate

This is a very important factor – a well-chosen primer will ensure proper performance of the topcoat. We can easily check the substrate's absorbency by pouring a small amount of water (40-50 ml) on the floor and then measuring the absorption time.

up to 2 minutes – very absorbent substrate – on such a substrate it is best to use solvent-free primers, such as Epoxol Primer SF
from 2 to 5 minutes – medium absorbent substrate – on low porosity substrates, solvent-based primers work better because they penetrate the substrate more easily and deeper, e.g. Epoxol Primer
above 5 minutes – non-absorbent substrate – substrates such as tiles, concrete troweled very smoothly (glossy) should be primed with RO3333 , which will ensure adhesion and durability of the top coat.

Floor condition

In both old and new facilities we can encounter various situations, such as:

Oil stains – in this case, the surface should be cleaned with concrete cleaning agents, such as Sulfanol . Unfortunately, oil stains will never be completely removed; in extreme cases (very large stains), the floor may need to be cut out and re-polished. If the stains are small, a solvent-based primer, such as Epoxol Primer ,
Damp floor – if the floor is frequently cleaned, it may be impossible to dry it thoroughly. In this case, apply Neopox Primer WS . This primer should only be used when moisture is entering from the outside, not from the ground via capillary action (next point).
Poorly installed insulation – if the floor is improperly insulated from the ground, there's likely a problem with capillary moisture rising, which causes the topcoat to loosen. In this case, we recommend Neopox Primer AY epoxy primer.
large cavities – large surface cavities can be filled with a putty made of a mixture of fine quartz sand and solvent-free Epoxol Primer SF-P (the exact proportions and possibilities are described in the product data sheet).
small cavities – for small cavities we can use ready-made epoxy putty Epoxol Putty.

Note – floors for resin systems should never be primed with ordinary uniprimers or impregnated with anything.
