Why choose specialized resins for swimming pools?

Paints intended for ordinary concrete surfaces are not designed for continuous contact with water. In a swimming pool, the coating performs under immersion conditions, under the influence of chlorine, pH regulators, and algaecides.

Chlorinated rubber paints are popular due to their ease of application and relatively low price. They are primarily used in seasonal or renovation pools. However, their disadvantages include shorter durability and lower chemical resistance. The very high stiffness of the material leads to frequent cracking and crumbling of the chlorinated rubber coating.

Polyurethane systems, on the other hand, provide:

• high UV resistance,
• color stability,
• greater flexibility of the coating.

What parameters should a concrete pool coating have?

Pool liners are subjected to constant stress, such as constant immersion and contact with pool chemicals. To withstand several seasons, they must have special parameters.

Resistance to pool chemicals and UV radiation

A pool coating must be resistant to chlorine, active oxygen, disinfectants, and constant pH changes. A lack of chemical resistance leads to chalking, discoloration, and micro-cracks.

How to check the moisture and porosity of a concrete substrate?

Concrete moisture content is one of the most important parameters determining the durability of a coating. An excessively moist substrate causes paint to blister and prevent proper curing.

Moisture content should be checked using the CM method or an electronic meter. The concrete should also be evenly absorbent and free of cement laitance. For moisture levels >4%, which is very common in outdoor applications, a damp-proof primer is used, which can achieve excellent adhesion in a humid environment.
