Construction of a tight membrane to prevent roof leaks

Using the example of a roof covered with trapezoidal aluminum sheets, we will show you how to make a tight membrane that prevents it from leaking.

As you can see, the roof was in poor condition. It was patched with strips of roofing felt, which did not adhere well and did not seal. The roof also leaked at mechanical connectors, flashings and ventilation chimneys.

Replacing such a roof is a large and expensive undertaking. To avoid this, we have proposed a system based on the waterproof Neoroof .

Neoroof is a water-soluble elastomeric paint that allows us to create a waterproof membrane on the roof without any joints that could potentially leak. The paint is spread using a brush, roller or spray.

The first step is to prepare the substrate by washing it thoroughly. This is very important because any dirt left on the surface may impair the adhesion and durability of the coating. Good preparation of the surface is always half the success in any painting.

For cleaning metal surfaces, we recommend the concentrated cleaning agent Emulsol RN-1 . It is diluted with water to a concentration of 2-3%. It is best to pressure wash the roof. With 1 liter of the preparation we can clean up to 100 m2 ^of roof! Then we rinse the roof with just water and leave it to dry.

The next step is to apply an appropriate foundation. Wash Primer W will ensure good adhesion of the topcoat . It is a single-component, water-soluble primer with excellent adhesion to aluminum and zinc. It should be diluted by adding 15-20% water and spread using a roller. Theoretical consumption is 95-115 ml/m ² .

Apply Revinex . It will stabilize the topping on the felt and ensure good adhesion to the topcoat. The product is diluted with water in the ratio of 1 part Revinex : 4 parts water. Theoretical consumption after dilution is 0.08 kg/m ² .

On the presented roof, the next step was to fill any gaps/gaps with the flexible Jointex .

Then we move on to the final layer, i.e. the Neoroof . of Neoroof with Neotextile were used . We use this system on roofs that leak and have visible gaps, and when the investor wants the coating to last as long as possible. If there are no visible cracks on the roof and there is no need to bridge various materials, you can apply 1 layer of primer + 2 layers of Neoroof .

When used with a reinforcing mesh, first apply one layer, then wet-paste the mesh and immediately paint it with a second layer, which is best applied perpendicular to the first one. It is very important not to trap any air bubbles under the mesh - at higher temperatures the air will expand and may damage the coating. Apply the third layer after it dries (min. 24 hours). Expected durability of the coating depending on the number of layers:

• primer + 2 layers of Neoroof – 10 years
• primer + 3 layers of Neoroof – 12 years
• primer + 3 layers of Neoroof with Neotextile mesh – 15 years

These are of course minimum durability times, in fact, if done correctly, the coating will last longer.

Repairs using the mesh can also be made locally, there is no need to spread it over the entire roof.

Below are some photos of the secured roof. As you can see, a completely tight coating was created without any joints. Additionally, the white color is certified to reflect sunlight - it reflects 88% of sunlight, which allows you to reduce the temperature on the roof by as much as 40%!
