One of the most important elements of every house is the roof. Using the help of professionals, we select the appropriate one during construction and we hope that it will meet our expectations and serve us for years. Sometimes, however, it turns out that for various reasons after some time it begins to lose its properties - the color fades, rust appears or the substrate becomes covered with algae. Instead of replacing the roof with a new one (which is an expensive and labor-intensive undertaking), it is possible to restore its properties by using an appropriate roof painting system.

In Poland, the most popular roof coverings include metal roofs made of black or galvanized steel and aluminum. Before choosing a system, we must first of all pay attention to the fact that the paint used is flexible. Metal roofs are a very demanding substrate, constantly exposed to alternating heating and cooling, which causes them to constantly shrink and expand - the appropriate paint must be able to withstand such loads.

One of the most popular paints for painting metal roofs available on the market is a product of our Polish manufacturer Polifarb Łódź - Lowicyn .

Preparing the surface for painting

As before any painting, it is very important to properly prepare the surface. The old, loose coating, all types of lichen and dirt should be removed from the substrate, as it impairs the adhesion of the topcoat and has a direct impact on the shorter durability of the system used. The roof should be cleaned - preferably with pressurized water, and if it is very dirty - with Emulsol RN-1 . The preparation is quite efficient because it is diluted with water (prepare a 2-3% solution), and a 0.5l package of concentrate is usually enough to degrease 20-50m2 ( depending on the degree of dirt). After washing, rinse the surface with clean water.

If there is rust on the roof surface, it must be removed (e.g. by sandblasting). In places that are difficult to access or not thoroughly cleaned of rust, use the Top-Kor . The product has a triple action: rust-removing (processes and binds rust), barrier (creates a barrier to oxygen and moisture, thus protecting against future rusting) and penetrating (penetrates hard-to-reach places and protects them). Top-Kor can only be used under solvent-based paints (Lowicyn and Lowicyn-Sx). For water-based paints (eco-Lowicyn), choose Neodur Metalforce .

Priming the substrate

  • black steel

Lowikor-2 anti-corrosion polyvinyl primer before the final painting . The primer creates covering, smooth coatings with good adhesion that work together with the substrate. Due to the content of active anti-corrosion pigments, the hardened coating protects iron alloys against corrosion by having a passivating effect on them.

  • Galvanized steel and aluminum

Lowicyn paint can be applied directly to galvanized steel and aluminum, so no additional primer is required. If rust efflorescence appears on the galvanized substrate, these places should be protected with Top-Kor and then the entire surface should be painted directly with Lowicyn .

  • Renovation painting

If the roof is in good condition and we only want to restore the color, Lowicyn can be applied directly to the old, well-adhering coating, previously properly cleaned of dirt.

Target coating

Lowicyn is a brand of roofing paints present on the market and used for over 20 years. These are polyvinyl paints and therefore flexible. Lowicyn paint should be applied in two layers to obtain the appropriate coating thickness. If the layer is too thin, it will have nothing to stretch with and will crack, leading to the coating peeling.

Key features:

  • It protects the substrate well against atmospheric factors, including acid rain,
  • Creates a smooth coating with good adhesion to the substrate,
  • Resistant to moisture and weakly acidic and weakly alkaline environments,
  • The paint coating is characterized by thermoplasticity,
  • It is not resistant to organic solvents,
  • The protective coating of the paint can be used indoors and outdoors, in moderate climates, in environments with a degree of corrosive aggressiveness C2, C3, C4, C5-I, C5-M,
  • Any application method – spray, roller, brush,
  • It can also be used to paint elements made of wood and wood-based materials, as well as plaster and concrete, if they are present in a building and it is required to maintain the color of the building.

Lowicyn paint is available in a wide range of colors and three finishing variants (matt, semi-matt, gloss), so it will satisfy even the most demanding customers:

  • Lowicyn – solvent-based polyvinyl paint with a matte finish. The most popular product.
  • Lowicyn-Sx – solvent-based paint with a glossy finish.
  • eco-Lowicyn – ecological water-based paint with a semi-matt finish.

As you can see, with minimal work, on your own or by hiring a contractor, you can renovate an "old" metal roof, and the protection provided in this way will allow you to enjoy it for the next few years.

If you do not like the colors available in the products from the Lowicyn line, also check out the Telkyd S 220 - we can dye it to any color from the RAL palette!

If our roof is in poor condition, the substrate is cracked and leaking, we should use the following system - how to seal a metal roof ?

We always include technical sheets with the order. You will also find them on our website, under the description of each product. Please read them before you start painting.
