One of the most important elements of any home is the roof. With the help of professionals, we choose the right one during construction, hoping it will meet our expectations and last for years. However, sometimes, for various reasons, it begins to lose its properties over time – the color fades, rust appears, or the substrate becomes overgrown with algae. Instead of replacing the roof (which is expensive and labor-intensive), it's possible to restore its original appearance by using a suitable roof coating system.

In Poland, the most popular roof coverings are metal roofs made of black or galvanized steel and aluminum. Before choosing a system, we must first ensure that the paint used is flexible. Metal roofs are a very demanding substrate, constantly exposed to alternating heating and cooling, causing them to constantly shrink and expand – the right paint must be able to withstand such loads.

One of the most popular paints for painting metal roofs available on the market is the product of our Polish manufacturer Polifarb Łódź – the Lowicin .

Below is a description of the system based on the above-mentioned paint – starting with roof cleaning and ending with the final coating.

Preparing the surface for painting

As before any painting job, proper substrate preparation is crucial. Remove any old, loose coating, any lichens, and dirt from the substrate, as this impairs the adhesion of the topcoat and directly shortens the durability of the system. The roof should be cleaned—preferably with pressurized water, and if very dirty—with Emulsol RN-1 . The agent is quite efficient because it is diluted with water (prepare a 2-3% solution), and a 0.5-liter container of concentrate is usually sufficient to degrease 20-50 m² ( depending on the degree of soiling). After cleaning, rinse the surface with clean water.

If rust is present on the roof surface, it must be removed immediately (e.g., by sandblasting). In hard-to-reach or poorly cleaned areas, use Top-Kor . The product has a triple action: rust remover (processes and binds rust), barrier (creates a barrier against oxygen and moisture, thus protecting against future rust), and penetrating (penetrates and protects hard-to-reach areas). Top-Kor can only be used under solvent-based paints (Lowicyn and Lowicyn-Sx). For water-based paints (eko-Lowicyn), choose Neodur Metalforce .

Priming the substrate

  • black steel

To provide the substrate with anti-corrosion properties before final painting, the roof should be protected with Lowikor-2 . The primer creates a covering, smooth coating with good adhesion that works with the substrate. The cured coating, due to its active anti-corrosion pigments, protects iron alloys from corrosion by passivating them.

  • Galvanized steel and aluminum

Lowicin paint can be applied directly to galvanized steel and aluminum, so no additional primer is required. If rust efflorescence appears on the galvanized surface, protect the area with Top-Kor , and then paint the entire surface directly with Lowicin .

  • Renovation painting

If the roof is in good condition and you only want to refresh the color, Lowicin can be applied directly to the old, well-adhering coating, previously properly cleaned of dirt.

Target coating

Lowicin is a brand of roofing paint that has been on the market for over 20 years. These paints are polyvinyl, and therefore flexible. After proper substrate preparation, Lowicin should be applied in two layers to achieve the appropriate coating thickness. If the layer is too thin, it will not have enough room to stretch and will crack, leading to peeling.

Key features:

  • It protects the substrate well against atmospheric factors, including acid rain,
  • Creates a smooth coating with good adhesion to the substrate,
  • Resistant to moisture and slightly acidic and slightly alkaline environments,
  • The paint coating is characterized by thermoplasticity,
  • It is not resistant to organic solvents,
  • The protective paint coating can be used indoors and outdoors, in moderate climates, in environments with a degree of corrosiveness of C2, C3, C4, C5-I, C5-M,
  • Any application method – spray, roller, brush,
  • It can also be used to paint elements made of wood and wood-based materials, as well as plaster and concrete, if they are present in a building and the color scheme of that building must be maintained.

Lowicin paint is available in a wide range of colors and three finishing options (matte, semi-matte, gloss), so it will satisfy even the most demanding customers:

  • Lowicin – a solvent-based polyvinyl paint with a matte finish. Our most popular product.
  • Lowicin-Sx – solvent-based paint with a glossy finish.
  • eko-Lowicyn – ecological water-based paint with a semi-matt finish.

As you can see, with minimal effort, either on your own or by hiring a contractor, you can renovate an "old" metal roof, and the protection provided in this way will allow you to enjoy it for several more years.

If you don't like the colors available in the Lowicin line, check out the Telkyd S 220 – we can dye it to any color from the RAL palette!

If our roof is in poor condition, the substrate is cracked and leaking, the following system should be used – how to seal a metal roof ?

We always include technical sheets with the order. You will also find them on our website, under the description of each product. Please read them before you start painting.
