Painting tiles is still not a very popular way of changing the interior design, but it allows you to save a lot of work related to removing old tiles and laying new ones. If your tiles are in good condition, but for various reasons you want to change their appearance, please read on.

PAINTING TILES STEP BY STEP - TABLE OF CONTENTS

1. Preparation of the substrate

As before any painting, it is very important to properly prepare the surface. The tiles should be thoroughly washed and degreased and any dirt removed that may impair the adhesion of the paint (dust, dust, etc.). We do not recommend using typical household detergents, such as dishwashing liquid, for this purpose. They often contain care additives that leave a film on the surface and thus impair adhesion. To thoroughly clean the substrate, we recommend the concentrated Emulsol RN-1 . The preparation is diluted with water to create a 2-3% solution. 2 from one half-liter bottle . The surface should then be washed with water.

All old silicones should also be removed. If silicones are painted over, the paint will crack and this will be a place where chips may start to form. After painting, apply Neotex PU Joint . We do not apply silicone to these places because silicone does not "work" with the paints we recommend for painting tiles. Neotex PU Joint mass comes in the same tubes as silicone, so it does not require any special squeezer.

2. Priming the substrate

The surface of the tiles is non-absorbent, so they must be covered with an appropriate adhesive primer to ensure the adhesion of the paint. For this purpose, the tiles should be repainted with two-component RO3333 .

Advantages:

  • water-soluble, so it is not burdensome to apply
  • two-component, very strong and durable
  • very efficient, 1 liter covers an area of 25-30 m22

The primer should be applied with a very thin layer of 15µ, previously diluted with water (according to the technical data sheet). The primer should be applied pile velvet roller or a sponge roller , with the exception of joints, which are preferably covered with a brush (a short-pile roller will not reach every nook and cranny).

3. Painting with topcoat paint.

After covering the tiles with RO3333 adhesive primer, wait 24 hours before painting with topcoat. Now all we have to do is choose the right topcoat. We always recommend two-component epoxy, polyurethane or polyurea paints for painting tiles. These paints are characterized by high hardness, durability and resistance to chemicals. The surface can be easily washed, the coating is also resistant to temperatures up to 100°C, which means it can be used around, for example, a stove or a tiled stove. An additional advantage of epoxy paints is their tightness. Below is a brief description of products that can be used as a finishing coating on tiles.

Neopox W Plus

Two-component, water-soluble epoxy paint for use on indoor floors and walls. The product is easy to apply and, thanks to its composition, is environmentally friendly. It can be used both in residential and public spaces, as well as in warehouse and production rooms. The paint is certified by the National Institute of Hygiene. It creates an easy-to-clean coating; after hardening, surfaces covered with Neopox W Plus can be cleaned with water and chemicals. The second layer is applied 24 hours after applying the first one. The coating fully hardens after 7 days.

An additional advantage of the product is that we dye it in colors from the RAL palette - choose a color that matches your interior!

If you have a very small area to repaint, you can check out a similar product - Epimal 200 , which is available in 0.7 liter packages.

Check out the recommended Neopox Special concrete paint

Two-component solvent-based epoxy paint for interior use (epoxy paints are not resistant to solar radiation). Glossy finish, easily washable surface. Paint used for painting floors in industrial halls and warehouses, with very high chemical and mechanical resistance. The second layer is applied 24 hours after applying the first layer. The coating becomes fully mechanical and chemically hardened after 7 days, before which time it cannot be washed with water or other cleaning agents.

This paint is also available in a solvent-free version - Neopox SF Plus (for painting floors, streaks may appear on walls)

Neodur Special

Two-component solvent-based polyurethane paint, available in the full RAL color palette. It can be used both indoors and outdoors. Glossy finish, easily washable surface. Like Neopox Special, it needs 7 days to fully harden.

Neodur Fast Track*

Innovative, quick-drying two-component solvent-based polyurea paint.
Creates glossy coatings that are more resistant than epoxy and polyurethane paints. The paint can also be used outdoors. Subsequent layers can be applied every 2-3 hours. 3 hours after applying the last layer, the floor can be walked on (light foot traffic). After 24 hours, it may be exposed to heavy traffic (including forklifts) and washed with cleaning products. *we do not recommend this paint for painting walls because it is spread by pouring it and then painting it with a roller

Advantages of painting tiles:

  • there is no need to remove tiles and then clean the entire apartment from dust
  • when painting tiles, we also paint over the joints, thus solving the problem of them constantly getting dirty
  • we ensure the tightness of the coating, which may be very important in the case of a terrace or kitchen/bathroom floor
  • We can do the painting ourselves, without paying extra for the tiler's work
  • the entire painting process, including hardening of the paint, takes less time than stripping, cleaning and laying new tiles
  • resistance to chemicals, frequent washing
  • hardness and durability of the coating
  • aesthetic finish

As you can see, repainting tiles is not a major problem these days and you can easily do it yourself.

We always include technical sheets with the order. You will also find them on our website, under the description of each product. Please read them before you start painting.
