Is it worth making a balcony floor with polyurethane resin?

Once popular solutions for balcony floors, usually based on tiles, are slowly becoming a thing of the past. The unfavorable Polish climate and the resulting frequent need for renovation, which translates into rising maintenance costs, make people reach for other, more economical solutions. One of them are resin floors made of polyurethane resin, which has recently become more and more popular and user satisfaction. Balcony made of polyurethane resins or tiles – what should you choose? 

The question that arises most often in the context of balcony floors is whether it is worth giving up tiles or other previously popular solutions in favor of polyurethane resin. It is not easy to answer this question unambiguously, but what speaks in favor of polyurethane resin as opposed to, among others, for tiles are:  

• possibility of obtaining a tight coating and eliminating leakage, which is a common problem, among others, in apartment blocks,  
• no joints – uniform surface,
• Less need for repairs.

In Poland, due to the prevailing climate, which in recent years has been quite humid for a significant part of the year, it is very easy for moisture to get under the joint or other joints on the floor, which leads to the loosening of traditionally used tiles. This, in turn, causes the floor to rapidly deteriorate.  

Advantages of a uniform resin surface

Thanks to the use of a jointless, i.e. uniform surface guaranteed by polyurethane resin, the costs of balcony floor renovation can be reduced to a minimum, because properly applied resin can have a shelf life of even more than 10 years!  

High resistance to weather conditions

Additionally, the polyurethane resin floor is fully resistant to weather conditions such as rain or UV rays - of course, after a period of full hardening, which in the case of this type of resin is usually 7 days. While the resin is hardening, make sure that the minimum temperature specified in the technical data sheet is maintained and that's all!

Polyurethane flooring for the balcony – available patterns and solutions 

If you decide to make a balcony floor from polyurethane resin, there are a number of solutions that can be used to obtain an interesting and unique effect. It is worth using decorative flakes , which will not only add additional aesthetic value to the floor, but will also help hide some imperfections. However, please remember that decorative flakes are not resistant to UV rays, moisture and other outdoor conditions , so they must be protected .

The ideal solution to protect the decorative flakes will be Floortop 1K or Colodur ECO Matt , which, due to their aliphatic structure as a transparent polyurethane resin, will provide the necessary protection to the floor without affecting the final aesthetic effect. It is worth mentioning here that resin floors are inherently slippery. To increase the safety of using such a floor, it is worth considering an anti-slip layer, especially if you plan to use the balcony all year round.
