The epoxy resin for the balcony is a popular solution, but it is not resistant to UV radiation, which can lead to yellowing and degradation under the influence of the sun. Neopox® Primer WS and Neopox® Primer Ay are used . Polyurethane coatings will work better for the final finish of the balcony.
What is epoxy resin?
Epoxy resin is a synthetic polymer resulting from the reaction of epoxy with hardeners. After hardening, it creates a hard, durable coating with high abrasion resistance. However, it is not resistant to UV radiation, which limits its use on balconies.
What properties does epoxy resin have?
High adhesion - adheres perfectly to concrete substrates.
Chemical resistance - withstands contact with many chemicals.
Mechanical resistance - is hard and resistant to abrasion.
Lack of resistance to UV - under the influence of the sun can yellow, charm and lose its properties.
Why does it work on balconies?
Epoxy resin can be used on balconies, but only as a soil for polyurethane or polymocker coatings. Products from Trkentech , such as Neopox® Primer WS and Neopox® Primer Ay , provide excellent adhesion and durability.
Types of epoxy resins on the balcony
Only epoxy soils are used on the balconies, such as:
Provides very good adhesion and surface protection against moisture rising,
Used for UV -resistant outer layers.
Advantages of epoxy resin for the balcony
Resistance to weather conditions
Epoxy resin as a soil protects the ground against moisture and water, but requires a UV -resistant finishing layer. Neopox® Primer WS can be applied on a moist surface without fear, ensuring adhesion of the top layer. In turn, Neopox® Primer AY protects terrace floor against capillary water.
Aesthetics and ease of cleaning
Epoxy soils improve the appearance of the surface and increase the durability of the outer layers of applied balcony and terrace systems. They create adequate adhesion for e.g. Neodur® FT Elastic, Neoproof® Polyurea R or Neodur® Special .
High durability and mechanical resistance
Thanks to the appropriate epoxy soil, the final coating retains high resistance to abrasion and damage.
How to prepare a balcony for an epoxy resin application?
Purification of the surface
All dirt, fats and dust should be removed to ensure good soil adhesion. If the floor has greasy spots, it should be degreased using surfactants. If this method does not work, then mechanical cleaning may be necessary.
Repair of cracks and unevenness
Cracks in concrete should be filled with appropriate repair material, such as EPOXOL® Putty , EPOXOL® Liquid or Neodur® FT Putty . Alternatively, you can make a repair mass yourself using the EPOXOL® Primer SF-P mixed with quartz sand. Each time, however, on the balcony, it is recommended to use soil on a moist ground, which is Neopox® Primer WS , which is applied before applying resinous repair masses.
Application of epoxy soil
The dry and cleaned surface is applied to the Neopox® Primer WS or Neopox® Primer Ay , which provide excellent adhesion to further finishing layers.
How to apply epoxy resin to the balcony? Step by step
Mechanical mixer or drill-free drill with a mixing tip.
Soil application
The soil should be mixed thoroughly and applied evenly to the surface. For this purpose, both ingredients are combined-the base and hardener in a fixed proportion, after which it is mixed with a low-speed stirrer for about 2-3 minutes. This is an important moment, because you need to mix the whole mixture thoroughly to properly spread the hardener. Mixing at low speed minimizes the aeration of the soil and the appearance of bubbles on the floor during the application.
Finishing layer
After drying the primer (according to the manufacturer's recommendations), a UV -resistant coating is applied, e.g. Neodur® Special . Neodur® FT Elastic , Neoproof® Polyurea R with the addition of Trken Stone or colorful sand will also work here At this stage, there is a wide range of solutions that can be selected for individual design needs.
Summary
The epoxy resin for the balcony is a great solution, but only as a preparatory soil. Products from Trkentech portfolio, such as Neopox® Primer WS and Neopox® Primer AY , ensure durability and surface protection, but the top layer should be made of UV -resistant materials, e.g. polyurethane coatings. Thanks to the right selection of products, you can get a durable and aesthetic balcony finish.
A two-component, cold-applied polyurea waterproofing membrane for roofs, terraces or balconies. Rain-resistant after 1 hour of application. Prevents moisture absorption and seals. Resistant to UV radiation and mechanical damage.
Neoproof Polyurea R liquid roofing membrane is root resistant (according to CEN/TS 14416:2014 ) and certified for external fire resistance according to EN 13501-5 . Polyurea R is classified as Broof (t1) and has certified Cool Roof properties (Cool Material ).
Putty for filling small holes or gaps on larger surfaces. It has greater plasticity than Epoxol Putty. Depending on the mixing ratio, three degrees of mass elasticity can be obtained.
Two-component putty for a wide range of applications. Depending on the mixing ratio of the ingredients, you can obtain a flexible, hard or very hard mass. Recommended for metal, concrete, wood and ceramics. Also for car and yacht repairs.
NOTE: WATER-BASED PRODUCT. Choose temperature-controlled shipping to receive the product on the declared date, regardless of the weather. Standard shipments may be held due to temperatures below 5°C along the delivery route.
No, the standard epoxy resin is not resistant to UV. There are some deviations when the epoxy has additionally added UV filters, but this is not a standard. Therefore, only epoxy soils are used for balconies, and the top layer should be made of UV -resistant materials, such as polyurethane or polymocker coatings.
How to care for the balcony covered with epoxy resin?
keyboard_arrow_downkeyboard_arrow_up
If the balcony is finished with a UV resistant coating, its care is limited to washing with water with a delicate detergent.
How much does epoxy resin application cost?
keyboard_arrow_downkeyboard_arrow_up
The cost depends on the surface of the balcony and the materials used. The average price of epoxy soil is about PLN 50-100/m², while the final finishing layer from polyurethane costs about PLN 100-300/m².
Epoxy resin or polyurethane for a balcony?
