What is corrosion and why does metal rust?
keyboard_arrow_down keyboard_arrow_upCorrosion is the process of gradual destruction of metal under the influence of the environment. The main factors are oxygen and moisture, and the process is accelerated by chlorides (road salt, sea spray), sulfur compounds, and industrial pollutants. The product of steel corrosion is rust – a porous coating of iron oxides that, while not protecting the metal, absorbs moisture and deepens the deterioration. The anti-corrosion coating acts as a barrier, cutting off the access of oxygen and water, and in the case of zinc paints, it also provides electrochemical protection (cathodic protection).
What are C1-CX corrosivity categories?
keyboard_arrow_down keyboard_arrow_upThis is a classification of environmental aggressiveness according to the PN-EN ISO 12944-2 standard. Six classes are distinguished for the atmosphere: C1 (very low – heated interiors: offices, schools), C2 (low – rural areas, unheated warehouses), C3 (medium – cities, industry, breweries and dairies), C4 (high – chemical plants, swimming pools, coastal areas with medium salinity), C5 (very high – aggressive industry and coastal areas), and CX (extreme – marine and offshore industries). The correct selection of a painting system begins with determining this class, which determines the type of coating and its thickness.
How to choose an anti-corrosion system for the operating conditions of the structure?
keyboard_arrow_down keyboard_arrow_upThe selection is based on two parameters: the environmental corrosivity class (C1-CX) and the required coating durability period. The PN-EN ISO 12944-1 standard defines four periods: short L (up to 7 years), medium M (7-15 years), long H (15-25 years), and very long VH (over 25 years). The higher the class and longer durability, the greater the required coating thickness and, more often, a multi-layer system (epoxy primer + polyurethane topcoat). For lighter conditions (C3), a single-component primer-finish, e.g., Telkyd S220 , is sufficient; for C4-C5, two-component systems, e.g., Telpox P100 and Telpur T300 , or a high-build elastomer are used .
How to prepare a steel structure for painting?
keyboard_arrow_down keyboard_arrow_upThe surface should be mechanically cleaned of old, flaking coatings and loose rust, and then degreased. Emulsol RN-1 – 0.5 liters of concentrate, after dilution, will prepare a solution sufficient for 20-50 m². The optimal preparation degree for anti-corrosion paints is Sa 2.5 (abrasive blasting). If all rust cannot be removed mechanically, the remaining areas should be protected with a rust remover, such as Neodur Metalforce. Depending on the system, priming with an anti-corrosion primer may be necessary.
What is the difference between a primer and a topcoat and a primer-enamel?
keyboard_arrow_down keyboard_arrow_upA primer (undercoat) provides adhesion to metal and initial anti-corrosion protection, but is typically not UV or abrasion resistant. A topcoat provides color, weather resistance, and aesthetic appeal. A primer combines both functions "in one" (2-in-1)—priming and creating a topcoat, which shortens the process for less corrosive environments (up to C3). However, in aggressive environments (C4-C5), a full system is recommended: epoxy primer + polyurethane topcoat.
Can you paint directly on rust?
keyboard_arrow_down keyboard_arrow_upTypically, no—loose rust is a weak substrate that will peel off along with the coating. Cleaning to Sa 2.5 provides the best results. When complete rust removal is impossible (e.g., in the field), there are two options: use a rust remover/neutralizer, such as Neodur Metalforce, which passivates the corrosion site, or choose products that can be applied to surfaces with a light rust coating, such as Stal-Kor. This reduces the cost of surface preparation.
How long does it take for metal paint to dry?
keyboard_arrow_down keyboard_arrow_upDrying time depends on the product, temperature, and humidity. Single-component solvent-based paints dry faster than water-based ones because the solvent is more volatile—for example, Telkyd S 200 TM is dust-free in about 20 minutes. Two-component paints (epoxies, polyurethanes), such as Telpur S210, chemically cross-link and typically require 24 hours to repaint, although they can be "touch-dry" after 0.5–4 hours. Note: a dry surface does not mean full curing—plan transportation and installation according to the product data sheet.
