Bituminous shingle paint is a specialized preparation intended for renovation, waterproofing and protection of roofs covered with bituminous shingles. Using the right paint allows you to refresh the appearance of the roof, increase its durability and protect it against moisture and harmful weather conditions.
What is asphalt shingle paint?
Bituminous shingle paint is a special protective coating that creates a flexible and waterproof layer on the roof surface. Thanks to its properties, it protects against UV radiation, precipitation and extreme temperatures, while improving the aesthetics of the roof covering.
Why is it worth using paint for bituminous shingles?
Using paint for asphalt shingles brings many benefits:
UV protection : The paint protects the shingles from degradation caused by the sun.
Cool roof : Using light colors, especially white, significantly reduces the temperature of the roof itself and the attic rooms. Additionally, bright colors reflect sunlight from their coating and increase the efficiency of photovoltaic panels.
Waterproof : Prevents water ingress, protecting your roof from leaks and moisture. Applying paint to bituminous shingles increases the waterproofing properties of the roof, fully sealing it.
Resistance to extreme temperatures : The paint maintains its properties at both low and high temperatures. Thanks to this, it fulfills its waterproofing function all year round.
Improved aesthetics : Refreshes the color and appearance of the roof, giving it a new shine.
Types of paints for bituminous shingles
There are various types of paints for bituminous shingles available on the market, it is worth knowing their characteristics before choosing one of them. Types of paints for bituminous shingles
Acrylic-elastomeric paints
They are characterized by good adhesion and flexibility. An example of an acrylic product is Neoroof® , which hardens under the influence of UV rays. It is available in several color variants, thanks to which you can maintain the classic appearance of the shingle and add a different, new character to it. Neoroof® product ensures complete waterproofing of a roof covered with shingles.
Polyurethane paints
They offer high resistance to abrasion and weather conditions. TrokenTech's offer includes products that are fully resistant to UV rays and are also water-based, such as Neoproof® PU W-40 or Neoproof® PU Fast -30 . Both are single-component products, so for application you only need to mix them inside a bucket and, in some cases, slightly dilute them with water. Correctly applied products create a fully waterproofing coating on a shingled roof, while remaining resistant to both extremely low and high temperatures.
Polyurea paints
They are extremely flexible, which allows them to cover micro-cracks and substrate movements. Materials of this type are the most durable among the others because they are two-component, i.e. they consist of a base and a hardener. These products are based on organic solvents and are resistant to early rainfall - even after an hour. Additionally, Neoproof Polyurea R , a representative of polyurea products, can be applied directly to the shingle without prior priming, which is impossible in the case of both elastomers and polyurethanes.
Advantages of using paint for bituminous shingles
The main advantages include:
Extending the life of the roof : The paint protects against external factors, which extends the durability of the roof. Creating a full waterproofing membrane on a roof covered with shingles is an additional benefit because not only is the roof renovated, but its function of protection against moisture is again given to it.
Cost savings : Renovating with paint is cheaper than replacing the entire roof covering. The use of some materials for shingle renovation, such as Neoproof® Polyurea R, does not require any primer during application, which translates into even shorter roof renovation time.
Ease of application : Most paints can be applied yourself, without the need to engage specialists. Often, a roller or brush is enough for proper application. Of course, you can also use a shower if you have this type of equipment, but it is not necessary.
How to prepare the shingle surface for painting?
Surface preparation is crucial for the durability of the paint coating. All stages of proper preparation are presented below.
Cleaning
It is necessary to remove all contaminants from the surface, such as dust, leaves, moss and mold. Additionally, the roof surface should be degreased and free from dirt, for example from car exhaust fumes, before being covered with any agent.
Damage repair
Any damage to the shingles, such as cracks or loose parts, should be identified and repaired. Before applying products intended as waterproofing protection for a shingle roof, each shingle flake should be glued with Jointex® in the case of Neoproof® PU W-40 , Neoproof® PU Fast -30 and Neoroof®. If Neoproof® Polyurea RNeotex® PU Joint is recommended for gluing the shingles and filling gaps .
Drying the surface
It's a good idea to make sure the roof is completely dry before applying the paint.
How to paint bituminous shingles correctly?
For best results:
Choosing the right paint : Adapted to the bituminous shingle and climatic conditions. It is worth considering the durability of the coating, the conditions in which it will be applied, but also the temperatures to which the roof will be exposed in the future. It is crucial to choose the right shingle roof protection system for your needs.
Following the manufacturer's recommendations : Following the instructions regarding application temperature, drying time and number of layers is crucial for proper application and hardening of the coating.
Using appropriate tools : Brush, roller or spray, depending on the manufacturer's recommendations and the nature of the material.
Care of a roof painted with bituminous shingle paint
After painting, it is worth regularly:
Inspect the condition of the coating : Check for damage or signs of wear.
Remove debris : Regularly clean the roof of leaves, branches and other debris.
Carry out minor repairs : If necessary, apply additional coats of paint to damaged areas.
A two-component, cold-applied polyurea waterproofing membrane for roofs, terraces or balconies. Rain-resistant after 1 hour of application. Prevents moisture absorption and seals. Resistant to UV radiation and mechanical damage.
Neoproof Polyurea R liquid roofing membrane is root resistant (according to CEN/TS 14416:2014 ) and certified for external fire resistance according to EN 13501-5 . Polyurea R is classified as Broof (t1) and has certified Cool Roof properties (Cool Material ).

One-component roof waterproofing for cold application. Recommended for roofs covered with felt , concrete flat roofs and metal roofs. Resistant to UV and mechanical loads. It creates a smooth, uniform waterproofing coating without joints, resistant to a wide temperature range from -40°C to +80°C . It has sun-reflecting and "cool roof" properties confirmed by the Cool Material certificate (white color).
Putty for joints and gaps. It works together with the substrate, is resistant to weather conditions and can be repainted. Recommended for flexible roof coatings.
Once fully dry, most bituminous shingle paints are resistant to rain, snow and frost, up to several dozen degrees below 0. Detailed information can always be found in the technical data sheet of the selected product.
