Epoxy paints
What are epoxy paints?
Epoxy paints are specialized protective coatings characterized by exceptional durability and resistance to various external factors. They are widely used in many industries due to their unique properties.
Composition and properties of epoxy paints
Epoxy paints consist of two main components: epoxy resin and a hardener. When mixed, a chemical reaction occurs, creating a hard and durable coating. Key properties of epoxy paints include:
- Abrasion resistance : Thanks to their hardness, these paints are resistant to mechanical damage.
- Chemical resistance : Effectively protect surfaces against aggressive chemicals, including acids, alkalis, fuels and oils.
- Adhesion : They adhere perfectly to various types of substrates, providing long-lasting protection.
- Moisture resistance : Protects surfaces against moisture and corrosion.
Application of epoxy paints
Epoxy paints are used in many sectors, such as:
- Industry : Protection of steel structures, floors, tanks and pipelines against corrosion.
- Construction : Painting concrete floors in warehouses, production halls and garages.
Types of epoxy paints
Depending on your specific needs, different types of epoxy paints are available:
Epoxy paint for concrete
Ideal for protecting concrete floors, providing them with abrasion and chemical resistance. Thanks to its structure, it adheres perfectly to the concrete substrate. Examples include Neopox® Special , as well as epoxy concrete primers such as Epoxol® Primer , Epoxol® Primer SF-P , and Neopox® Primer WS .
Epoxy paint for metal
It protects metal surfaces against corrosion and mechanical damage. This is achieved thanks to the use of metallic pigments that have anti-corrosive properties. There are anti-corrosive primers such as Neopox® Primer 815 , Telpox S200 , and enamels without anti-corrosive additives such as Telpox T300 . When using an enamels that do not contain anti-corrosive pigments, it is essential to use an epoxy primer that contains this ingredient.
Epoxy paint for tiles
SuperSpoiwo RO 3333 is ideal for this purpose ; it is applied directly to washed and degreased tiles. It creates an ideal base layer for colored epoxy resin, ensuring high adhesion. Neopox® W Plus epoxy paint is applied as a topcoat. This product is tinted according to the RAL palette, allowing for the most colorful designs without worrying about material availability.
Epoxy paint for garage
Used on garage floors, it provides resistance to oils, greases, and other chemicals. There are also complete flooring systems that include an epoxy primer and epoxy paint. There are also products that can perform both functions, creating a single flooring system. An example is Troken Floor Protect 3-in-1 , which can be applied as an epoxy primer, epoxy enamel, or as an epoxy scratch coat.
Advantages of using epoxy paints
Using epoxy paints has many benefits:
- Durability : Long-lasting surface protection.
- Resistance : Effective protection against chemicals and moisture.
- Aesthetics : A smooth and aesthetically pleasing finish is possible. In some cases, almost any color from the RAL palette can be obtained, such as Neopox® W Plus . This allows for a wide range of color options, both for walls and floors.
- Easy to clean : Epoxy-coated surfaces are easy to keep clean. All you need is a soft-bristled mop and warm water with a mild detergent.
How to prepare a surface for painting with epoxy paint?
Proper surface preparation is crucial to achieving a durable and aesthetically pleasing finish. Here are the steps to follow:
1. Cleaning the surface
All dirt, grease, oil, and other contaminants must be removed from the surface. If the surface has greasy stains, which reduce the adhesion of the epoxy paint, it is necessary to use degreasing agents such as Sulfanol A or Emulsol . It is important to thoroughly wash off any residue of these agents, as this may weaken the adhesion of the epoxy paint.
2. Removing loose parts
It's essential to remove flaking paint, rust, and other loose particles that could affect the adhesion of the new coating. For concrete substrates, it's crucial to ensure the surface is as uniform as possible. To achieve this, any holes and cracks must be filled. Ready-mix repair compounds such as Epoxol® Putty or Liquid , or solvent-free epoxy primers such as Neopox® Primer WS or Epoxol® Primer SF-P mixed with fine quartz sand.
3. Grinding
Before applying epoxy paint, it is recommended to sand the surface to ensure better adhesion. For epoxy paint systems applied by brush or roller, light sanding is recommended. This will open the structure of concrete, for example, and increase its absorbency, while significantly improving the adhesion of the entire system.
4. Priming
Depending on the type of substrate, an appropriate primer is used to increase the adhesion of the epoxy paint. Epoxy primers are used for this purpose, which, depending on the type of substrate being protected, will increase its adhesion. For low-quality concrete substrates, such as screed or anhydrite, the deeply penetrating epoxy primer Epoxol Primer® . It penetrates the concrete structure, strengthening it. Epoxol Primer SF-P For damp substrates, epoxy primers such as Neopox® Primer WS or Neopox® Primer AY . Tiles are protected with the adhesive epoxy primer RO 3333 SuperSpoiwo Neopox® Primer 815 or Telpox P170 are used for anti-corrosion protection .
