Resin floors - what to pay attention to when choosing?

Select a product that combines functional and aesthetic considerations, as well as financial and technical possibilities.

• The time available for painting the floor – if we can't allocate at least 7-10 days for renovation and full curing of the substrate, it's worth considering fast-curing resins. Fast-drying polyurea resin is the best solution in this case. Depending on the product chosen, subsequent coats are applied every 2-3 hours, and the floor can be fully serviced just 24 hours after applying the last coat.

• Temperature – Traditional epoxy or polyurethane resins require an ambient and substrate temperature of at least +12°C. This temperature should be maintained not only during application but also during the 7-day curing period. Otherwise, the resin will not bond, will remain sticky, and will need to be removed. In this case, quick-drying polyurea resins, which cure at +5°C, are also a solution.

• Aesthetic considerations – self-leveling epoxy or polyurethane screeds are poured to a thickness of 1-4 mm. They create uniform, smooth, glossy surfaces. Resins applied with a roller (so-called thin-layer) will always have a subtle texture visible. Therefore, if a perfectly smooth surface is your priority, we recommend choosing self-leveling resin screeds.

• Price - When price is the most important factor, we always recommend Neopox Special epoxy floor paint. An equally good choice is Neodur Special polyurethane floor paint, which is available in a mixing system – you can choose any color from the RAL palette! Both products represent a very good compromise between price and quality.

• Odor during application – it often happens that only part of a building is being renovated, while the rest is occupied. In such cases, we recommend choosing solvent-free flooring resins. They emit virtually no odor during application and curing. This is also a good option for those who, for various reasons, do not want to work with solvent-based products. Examples of solvent-free products include: Neopox SF Plus, Epoxol Floor, Neodur Fast Track SF, and KLB-System Polyurethan PU 405.

Polyurethane varnish is a special type of finish used to protect polyurethane resin surfaces. It is a type of clear or colored varnish designed to increase the durability and resistance of the resin surface to external factors such as moisture, UV radiation, abrasion, and scratching.

Polyurethane varnishes from the Neodur Varnish line are excellent for protecting porous mineral surfaces such as concrete, brick, or microcement. These materials are now widely used in interiors, giving them a modern, industrial look. It's worth considering proper protection in advance to protect the surface from dirt and damage.

Polyurethane floor varnish is also often used as a topcoat for other resins. This allows you to change the gloss level of the finishing layer or protect floors sprinkled with decorative flakes. Polyurethane resin varnish is characterized by very good resistance to abrasion and mechanical damage, protecting the surface and extending its durability. Furthermore, its transparency allows you to highlight the resin's color, thus enhancing its aesthetic effect. Polyurethane varnishes can be applied directly, after first sanding or priming the surface with a suitable primer, depending on the type of substrate being applied.

Substrate preparation is a crucial step in applying a resin flooring system. The quality of the cement screed and its mechanical preparation are one thing, but equally important is selecting the right resin for priming the floor. Priming has a significant impact on the quality, appearance, and durability of the final coating, so it's important to do it thoroughly and select the right primer for the specific situation.

Depending on the project, the primer must meet various requirements. Priorities may include drying time, the ability to apply to damp concrete, or the need to prevent capillary moisture from rising.

Garage floor paint, whether for home or multi-car garages, must meet a number of requirements. Primarily, it must protect the concrete substrate from dirt, oil, grease, and road salt. Ease of cleaning, aesthetics, and anti-slip properties are also key considerations.

We've prepared several solutions that are perfect for finishing garage floors. We've divided them based on the total time required to complete the job. Depending on how quickly you need to return the floor to service, you can choose either a traditional epoxy/polyurethane systemor a quick-drying polyurea system. A polyurea system is also better suited for unheated garages where application temperatures suitable for epoxy and polyurethane cannot be achieved.

Quick-drying polyurea resin

Neodur Fast Track resins are the perfect solution for quickly completing the job and returning the garage to use. Recoating time between coats is 2-3 hours, and the car can be driven into the garage just 24 hours after applying the last coat. An additional advantage of these resins is their ability to cure at low temperatures – as low as +5°C! Resins from this line are available in two variants – solvent-based Neodur Fast Track and solvent-free Neodur Fast Track SF . These variants differ only in odor. The solvent-free version has no unpleasant odor due to the absence of solvents. When applying solvent-based resins, wear a face mask due to their intense odor.

Traditional resins

Epoxy and polyurethane resins are also excellent for garage flooring, but their application requires more time and proper application temperature. Subsequent coats are applied every 24-36 hours (depending on the ambient temperature), and the minimum temperature required for curing is +12°C. 7-10 days should elapse after the final coat is applied before the floor is ready for use. Their advantage over polyurea resins is their price. Additionally, Neodur Special is available in a mixing system – you can choose any RAL color!

Before applying the resin, remember to properly check the substrate for moisture and prepare the surface, cleaning it of any contaminants such as: 

• dust,
• oil, 
• dirt, 
• grease, 
• chemicals

It is also important to carry out local repairs, including leveling the surface, e.g. using repair compounds.

If you want to obtain additional properties or a visual effect when applying flooring resins, it is worth considering purchasing additives. 

Depending on their purpose and function, accessories can be divided into two groups:

• additives affecting the properties of the resin
• accessories that influence the appearance of the floor

The first group of additives includes products whose application provides additional benefits, such as a non-slip effect, masking unevenness, changing the structure of the resin floor, or changing the product's density. It's worth noting that some of these products positively impact the floor's durability and resistance. 

Products worth attention:

• polyethylene resin additive,
• thixotropic additive for resins

Line marking is a crucial aspect in parking lots, multi-car garages, warehouses, and production facilities. It helps organize traffic flow, designate storage areas, and pedestrian paths.

Line painting paints

Line marking paints can be divided into two categories: spray paints and brush paints. All of the following products allow for quick painting/refreshing of lines. However, these are single-component products, which have limited durability, especially with intensive use. In such cases, it's worth considering painting lines with two-component chemically cured paints, such as Neopox Special or Neodur Special (a wide range of colors). Line marking paints, such as Neopox Special, are specialized paints characterized by high mechanical and chemical resistance, making them ideal for painting lines on surfaces such as concrete, asphalt, wood, or metal. Their weather resistance is also worth mentioning, ensuring the lines retain their appearance for a long time and allowing them to be applied in one or more layers, depending on your needs and requirements. Temporary marking sprays

Temporary marking sprays are products that allow you to mark specific areas, lines or symbols on various surfaces for a short period of time.

They are widely used in many fields, including construction, industry, agriculture, team sports and others.

Surveying sprays are perfect for any construction site requiring temporary markings. Depending on the surface and weather conditions, the markings will remain visible for up to six months. If you need short-term markings, for example, for an event, choose spray chalk – the markings will disappear after the first rain.

Essential accessories

Concrete floors require regular inspection, paying particular attention to cracks and other imperfections. 

Concrete voids are a common problem, whether in industrial floors, private garages, or balcony slabs. They pose not only an aesthetic problem but, above all, can contribute to accelerated floor deterioration in the future. Therefore, it's important to address them, especially before applying resin flooring systems. 

Depending on the problem, you can choose from ready-made concrete fillers , which are particularly effective for repairing smaller, localized defects. If you need to level or fill a larger surface, you can make your own by combining Epoxol Primer SF-P epoxy resin with quartz sand.

Concrete repair compound provides mechanical strength, which is essential for repairing cracks and holes in concrete. For exterior concrete repair, we recommend using polyurea- and polyurethane-based fillers. If you're planning a project and need it completed quickly, we recommend polyaspartic fillers. This type of filler can be sanded and painted after just two hours thanks to its quick-drying properties. 

In addition to concrete fillers, it's also worth considering the flexible polyurethane filler Neotex PU Joint for filling expansion joints. Joints are filled at the very end, after applying the flooring resin. This product can also be used to aesthetically finish floors. Importantly, it doesn't require priming. 

The growing popularity of resin-based floors is a sign of technological progress thatThis is happening before our eyes. Therefore, an important question for every potential resin floor owner is the price per square meter. It's important to remember that such a key factor as price per square meter will be influenced by many factors, but only a few can be determined. Some of the most important parameters include coating thickness, resin type, and resin quality. Coating thickness can, to some extent, determine the durability of the floor, while also determining the maximum possible load that can be placed on it. The type of resin, in turn, will determine the application area for which the resin floor will be suitable. Some will be suitable for interiors, while others will be applied outdoors. Both coating thickness and resin type will determine the final price per square meter of the resin floor.

When considering purchasing resin for a garage, it's worth considering several factors that may impact the final price. The first factor is the room's exposure to sunlight: if the room receives a lot of sunlight, using epoxy resin may result in chalking (the resin lacks UV resistance). However, applying a suitable varnish that reflects this radiation can prevent this effect. The varnish application will, of course, affect the final price per square meter of resin flooring applied in a garage or apartment. Another factor is the floor's thickness: when choosing thin-layer products, applied with a roller or brush, it's important to remember that prior floor preparation should be very thorough, as such a preparation will highlight any irregularities. Thick-layer products, applied with a squeegee, can conceal certain defects or imperfections in the floor. Prices per m2 of resin floors can therefore vary significantly and range from a few zlotys per m2 to several dozen or even several hundred, depending on the customer's requirements or the floor itself.

An important factor that is often overlooked in calculations, but is crucial for the price per square meter of resin flooring, is proper substrate preparation. Depending on whether you're dealing with high-quality concrete or a highly absorbent screed floor, you need to choose the right primer, which also determines the final price per square meter of resin flooring. When selecting a primer for a resin floor, you should also consider the substrate's moisture content, whether it is properly insulated, and whether there are any types of leaks. If any of these factors are present in the prepared substrate, it's worth choosing a primer for a damp substrate or one that can block moisture, for example, in the event of capillary action. This, of course, affects the final price per square meter, which should be calculated when choosing a resin floor for both indoor and outdoor applications.
