Anti-corrosion paints

What are anti-corrosion paints?

Anti-corrosion paints are specialized protective coatings that prevent rust from forming on metal surfaces. They are used in a variety of industries, from heavy industry to home applications, where metal structures are exposed to moisture, salts, or chemicals.

How do anti-corrosion paints work?

Anti-corrosion paints work by creating a protective barrier between the metal and external factors such as oxygen, moisture, and chemical contaminants. Depending on their composition, they can:

  • isolate the metal surface from corrosive factors,
  • contain corrosion inhibitors that chemically counteract the rusting process, e.g. zinc phosphate,
  • act as a conductive layer that prevents the formation of corrosion cells.

Application of anti-corrosion paints

Anti-corrosion paints are widely used in:

  • construction – protection of steel elements of bridges, halls and supporting structures,
  • automotive – securing vehicle bodies and chassis,
  • maritime industry – protection of ships and drilling platforms against the effects of seawater,
  • households – protection of fences, balustrades and other metal elements exposed to weather conditions.

Types of anti-corrosion paints

Alkyd paints

These are among the most commonly used anti-corrosion paints. They are characterized by good adhesion to the substrate and resistance to weather conditions, such as Telkyd S200 , an alkyd primer-finish tinted according to the RAL palette .

Epoxy paints

Paints with very high chemical and mechanical resistance. Used primarily in industry and on surfaces requiring long-term protection. In addition to epoxy enamels, anti-corrosive epoxy resin-based primers, such as Neopox® Primer 815 or Telpox P100 . They provide excellent anti-corrosion protection for the substrate and create the right adhesion conditions for subsequent system layers.

Polyurethane paints

They provide durable protection and an aesthetic finish. Often used as a topcoat in protective systems, they can also be used as primers and topcoats. Examples include Krypton ProLine PU Al PRIMER , a polyurethane anti-corrosion primer, Krypton ProLine Silver TC , and Telpur S210 .

Zinc paints

They contain zinc particles that act as an anode, preventing corrosion at an electrochemical level. They are primarily used in heavy industry and steel structures. Cold galvanized steel is often found in the form of paint or spray, such as Galva Zinc or Galva Zinc Spray .

How to prepare metal for painting with anti-corrosion paint?

Surface cleaning

Before painting, the metal should be thoroughly cleaned of rust, dust, and grease. This can be done mechanically (grinding, sandblasting) or chemically (using degreasers and rust removers).

Rust removal

If rust is present on the metal surface, it should be removed with a wire brush, sandpaper, or a special chemical. Rust converters can also be used to convert visible rust into a less reactive form. Top-Kor is used for this purpose, for solvent-based products only, and Neodur® Metal Force is used for both water-based and solvent-based products.

Degreasing

The metal must be degreased for the paint to adhere properly. This can be accomplished using solvents or dedicated products such as Sulfanol A or Emulsol .

Applying anti-corrosion primer

Neopox® Primer 815 are often used .

How to apply anti-corrosion paints?

Anti-corrosion paints can be applied in several ways:

  • Brush – an ideal method for painting small surfaces and details,
  • Roller – quick coverage of large surfaces,
  • Spraying – a professional method that ensures an even coating without streaks.

Before painting, mix the paint thoroughly and follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding temperature and application conditions.

FAQ: Anti-corrosion paints

The best anti-corrosion paint depends on the operating conditions. Alkyd and polyvinyl paints are often chosen for home use, while zinc, polyurethane, or epoxy paints predominate in industrial applications.

Paint durability depends on its type and the conditions in which it is applied. There are different classes of corrosive environments and different durability periods, which are determined by the coating thickness and paint type. The shortest durability period is up to 7 years and requires the thinnest paint layers compared to the other durability periods.

Some anti-corrosion paints are designed to be applied directly to rust, but for improved durability, it's always recommended to clean the surface first.

Anti-corrosion paints are an effective way to protect metal from rust. Choosing the right type and properly preparing the surface will ensure long-lasting protection and the aesthetic appearance of metal structures.
