Polyurethane floors
What are polyurethane floors?
Polyurethane floors are durable floor protection that is easy to keep clean, resistant to UV rays and yellowing, and in the case of many products, they are available in any color. Thanks to this, the substrate is protected for many years while maintaining its elegant aesthetics.
Properties of polyurethane
Polyurethane floors are characterized by exceptional chemical resistance, resistance to mechanical damage and aesthetic appearance. Polyurethane is a material that works well in various conditions, both indoors and outdoors. The possibility of dyeing polyurethane-based products allows you to obtain a resin floor in almost any color. Additionally, polyurethane floors are, in most cases, resistant to UV rays thanks to their aliphatic structure, which extends the life of the aesthetic finish over time. However, it should be remembered that after many years of using a polyurethane floor in an apartment, there may be a slight difference in shade between a place where, for example, there was less sunlight (e.g. there was furniture there) and a place where the rays reached all the time.
Polyurethane and epoxy floors - comparison
Although both types of flooring are popular, resin polyurethane floors are more flexible, which makes them better able to withstand dynamic loads, e.g. in garages or warehouses. Epoxy floors, on the other hand, offer greater hardness, but are less resistant to cracking. Another difference is the increased resistance of polyurethanes to sunlight and the ultraviolet rays they contain. This property of aliphatic polyurethanes translates into the possibility of using them to create an aesthetic resin floor on a terrace or in places with increased sunlight, i.e. apartments.
Types of polyurethane floors and their applications
Polyurethane-based resin floors seem very similar. However, floor systems are constructed differently depending on the intended use. In the case of polyurethane floors, there are differences in the selection of the ground: a different ground will be used for polyurethane floors in apartments and a different one for terraces.
Polyurethane floors for the terrace
Polyurethane patio floors are resistant to weather conditions, including rain, frost and UV radiation, making them an ideal choice for outdoor use. They can be safely used on various substrates, such as concrete or metal, but it is necessary to select the appropriate primer. Using it, the subsequent polyurethane surface will have the proper conditions for binding. The most frequently chosen primer for outdoor concrete substrates is a primer for wet substrates, e.g. Neopox® Primer WS.
Polyurethane floors in the apartment
In apartments, these floors are valued for their elegant appearance, ease of cleaning and comfort of use. The ability to adapt the color of the floor to specific design requirements not only allows you to properly complement the interior, but also during subsequent renovations you can easily change the character of the interior by repainting the floor in a different color. Polyurethane floors for apartments are often highly flexible, thanks to which the resin floor does not crack when the building is in operation.
Application of polyurethane flooring
Floors made of polyurethane resin, thanks to their properties such as excellent resistance to many chemicals, including fuels and red wine, as well as excellent abrasion resistance, can be used in a number of different places, from apartments, through garages, parking lots, to industrial facilities or public use facilities.
Where are floors most often used?
Polyurethane floors are used in:
- single-family houses and apartments,
- garages,
- warehouses and production halls,
- on terraces, balconies and external stairs,
- in public places such as offices, museums and hospitals.
When is it worth choosing a polyurethane resin floor?
Polyurethane resin floors are an ideal choice when a combination of strength and flexibility is required, the surface is to be aesthetic and easy to clean, and when floors that are resistant to moisture and weather conditions are needed (e.g. in the case of terraces). Additionally, resin floors will work well wherever a specific floor color is required, because the vast majority of products based on this resin can be colored according to the RAL palette.
How to care for a polyurethane floor?
Regular cleaning with a soft brush or mop with mild detergents allows you to maintain the aesthetics of the floor for years. Avoid harsh chemicals that may damage the protective layer. The use of aggressive chemicals may lead to the degradation of the top layer of the polyurethane floor and accelerate the need for its renovation or, in some cases, complete replacement.

Does polyurethane resin scratch?
keyboard_arrow_down keyboard_arrow_upAlthough polyurethane resin is resistant to severe scratches, minor marks may appear in places that are heavily used. When deciding on a polyurethane floor, it is worth immediately thinking about protecting it against scratches with an appropriate varnish. The varnishes are also based on polyurethane, so they are fully compatible with standard polyurethane floors. Thanks to the use of varnish, the life of the floor is not only extended, but also its subsequent renovation is easier.
Does the polyurethane floor allow water to pass through?
keyboard_arrow_down keyboard_arrow_upPolyurethane floors are fully waterproof, which makes them ideal for terraces and rooms exposed to moisture. Thanks to the lack of absorbency of the polyurethane floor, it can also be used outside terraces in other places with humid conditions, e.g. car washes, industrial halls, as well as bathrooms in residential buildings.
Does the polyurethane floor crack?
keyboard_arrow_down keyboard_arrow_upThanks to their flexibility, polyurethane floors are less susceptible to cracking than epoxy floors, making them a permanent solution. However, it may happen that the polyurethane floor will crack as a result of floor movement or excessive force. If it is known in advance that sufficiently high forces may act on the floor in the future, it is worth choosing a highly flexible polyurethane at the design stage that will meet such conditions.
