Cold galvanizing

What is cold galvanizing?

Cold galvanizing is a method of protecting metal from corrosion by applying a zinc-rich coating without the need for high temperatures. Unlike hot-dip galvanizing, this process does not require immersing the components in molten zinc, making it more flexible and easier to perform on-site.

How does cold galvanizing work?

Zinc paint creates a protective coating that works in two ways:

  1. Cathodic (galvanic) protection – zinc particles in the coating oxidize instead of the metal, which effectively protects it against corrosion.
  2. Barrier protection – the coating isolates the metal from external factors such as moisture or chemicals.

Thanks to these mechanisms, cold galvanizing provides long-lasting anti-corrosion protection.

In what situations is it worth using?

Cold galvanizing is particularly recommended in the following cases:

  • Repair of damaged zinc coatings – e.g. after welding or cutting, on sheet metal roofs and other places where the zinc layer has been broken.
  • Protection of steel structures – used in construction, maritime and energy industries to increase the anti-corrosion properties of protected coatings.
  • Protection of hard-to-reach elements – where hot-dip galvanizing is not possible.

What are the types of cold galvanizing?

There are various preparations available on the market, including:

  • Zinc paints in cans , such as Galva ZINC , are ideal for application by brush or roller in areas with easy access to the surface being protected. They can be used as both a primer and a topcoat. Galva Zinc Alu is a similar product, but is suitable for new, cleaned, or sandblasted surfaces. It is quick-drying.
  • Zinc sprays , such as Galva Zinc Spray , are a convenient solution for small surfaces. In this case, it's a matte gray primer that primarily protects welds. Galva Zinc Alu Spray .
  • Specialized preparations – with increased resistance to chemicals and high temperatures.

How to apply cold galvanizing?

1. Choosing the right product

The selection of the appropriate preparation depends on the type of surface, operating conditions and application method.

2. Surface preparation

To ensure the effectiveness of cold galvanizing, the surface should be

  • cleaned of dirt, oils and grease,
  • degreased with an appropriate solvent,
  • dried before applying paint

3. Application of zinc paint

Cold galvanizing can be applied in several ways:

  • Brush – for precise repairs,
  • With a roller – for larger surfaces,
  • Pneumatic spraying – for an even layer,
  • Spray – e.g. Galva Zinc Alu Spray for hard-to-reach places.

4. Applying subsequent layers

Depending on the product and the desired coating thickness, multiple coats may be necessary. Each coat should be applied only after the previous one has completely dried.

5. Hardening and protecting the coating

After application, allow the paint to fully cure, which can range from several hours to several days. If necessary, you can further protect the coating with a topcoat.

FAQ: Cold galvanizing

The durability of cold galvanized metal depends on coating thickness, environmental conditions, and application quality. A well-applied coating can protect the metal for many years.

Yes, most cold-galvanized zinc coatings are paintable. Ensure the coating is dry and cured before applying a topcoat.

Hot-dip galvanizing involves dipping metal in molten zinc, which provides a highly durable coating. Cold galvanizing works by applying a zinc coating over paint, allowing for easier and more localized application.

Cold galvanizing, such as Galva Zinc or Galva Zinc Spray , is an excellent solution for protecting metal from corrosion, especially in hard-to-reach areas. Proper surface preparation and the use of high-quality products can achieve durable and effective corrosion protection.
